The End of Seat Licences: Why Assessment Is Going Pay-As-You-Go

Annual contracts and per-seat licences made sense when assessment was an enterprise-only purchase. Credit-based, usage-priced assessment changes who gets to measure skills — and how often.

By AssessAll Editorial

For two decades, serious talent assessment came with a serious procurement cycle: annual contracts, per-seat licences, minimum commitments, and a sales process measured in quarters. That model made assessment an enterprise luxury — and made "assess everyone, often" economically impossible for almost everyone else.

The subscription trap

Subscription pricing punishes exactly the behaviour assessment is supposed to encourage. If you pay per month, idle months are wasted spend; if you pay per seat, growing the programme grows the bill before it grows the value. HR teams respond rationally: they assess less often, gate assessments behind approvals, and reserve them for a few "critical" roles.

What usage pricing changes

AssessAll runs on a single unit — the credit (1 credit = ₹30, about US$0.50). A self-insight profile costs 15 credits; an applied-skill assessment 26; a full leadership battery 45–50. There are no seats and no subscriptions, so the marginal cost of assessing one more person is just that person's assessment — nothing else.

That flips the economics of good practice. Pre/post measurement around a training programme stops being a budget line and becomes a habit. Screening every applicant — not just the shortlisted few — becomes affordable. A pilot needs no procurement at all: individuals get 100 free credits on signup, and organisations get 250.

Money out front, credits underneath

One detail matters for adoption: consumers don't want to learn a currency. So AssessAll's public Store sells single assessments at a clean money price (from ₹649), while the same purchase resolves to credits in the ledger underneath. Organisations, who do want a budget instrument, get the wallet: packs at 250, 1,000, and 5,000 credits with volume discounts up to 13%.

What to look for in usage-priced assessment

If you're evaluating platforms, three questions separate real usage pricing from repackaged subscriptions: Is there a monthly fee even in idle months? Does the per-assessment price include the report, or is that extra? And do unused balances expire? (On AssessAll: no monthly fee, reports included, purchased credits never expire — only free signup credits have a 90-day window.)

The age of assessing once a year because the licence made more measurement free-but-pointless is ending. Usage pricing means measuring when the decision happens — which is the only time measurement matters.
