Technical Trainer Readiness — Training Needs Analysis

A pre-training needs analysis for subject-matter experts who are about to train their own teams. It measures applied instructional judgment across eight domains — diagnosing whether training is even the right intervention, writing objectives, managing cognitive load when explaining automated expertise, designing demonstrations and labs, facilitating a technical room, engineering practice and feedback, motivating people who did not choose to attend, and converting a course into on-the-job behaviour. Items are behavioural-tendency situational judgment scenarios set in real engineering delivery contexts, where every option is something a capable SME might actually do; the key is weighted to the instructional-design and learning-science evidence rather than to intuition. Alongside the graded items, participants rate their own confidence in each domain and describe their delivery context, so the report can show the gap between confidence and capability — and so a facilitator can rank what a workshop must cover. There is no pass mark: this is a diagnostic, and results are reported as developmental stages. Administration time: 30-40 minutes.
